What is the difference between body butter and body lotion?
Sally, TX USA

Hi Sally, body butter is usually a much thicker consistency than body lotion. This is because it is missing a lot (70-90% some people say) of water which is found in body lotions. Many have a much higher concentrate of the ingredients that make them so nourishing (like shea, mango or cocoa butter) and are best for dry skin.

If you apply a lotion every day and still feel as though your skin is quite dry in the evening, give a body butter like Pure Fiji Coconut Body Butter a try.

Alternatively, if you only need a light moisturiser, you are best off trying a lotion first. They are quicker to absorb into normal skin and give a more moderate dose of moisture. Pure Fiji make a gorgeous Hydrating Body Lotion that I use every day, and it comes in 7 fantastic scents.

How do I get rid of dry, chapped lips?
- Sonia, NSW

Hi Sonia, the best way to clear up your lips is to nourish and protect.

Nourish your lips with an almond oil based product, like Shizen Lip Hydrating Serum which will rehydrate your lips while the shea butter will leave them silky smooth.

Now to protect your lips, a barrier product is best. Try one without petroleum like Shizen Lip Conditioner, or Lip Tint if you are looking for one with a bit of colour.

Apply a drop of the Shizen Lip Hydrating Serum to your lips and follow up with a swipe of lip conditioner to lock in the moisture.

I'm 32 and still have back pimples - do they ever go away?
- Joanne, VIC

Hi Joanne, unfortunately as we get older our cell turnover decreases leaving our skin not quite as supple and smooth as we remember when we were younger. Environmental pollution, diet, smoking & the sun all affect how well our body maintains its glow.

We can help our body with a weekly scrub to slough off dead skin cells, promote cell regeneration and let the new skin shine. A scrub like Pure Fiji’s Sugar Rub has natural acids to help gently remove dead skin while the coconut oil leaves your skin super smooth.

Do you have any products that are suitable to use if I recycle my shower water on my garden?
Adrian, Canada

Hi Adrian, both Pure Fiji &Shizen products are phosphate free & safe to use on your garden. Recycling your bath & shower water is a great way to do your bit for the environment as well as keeping a lush looking garden.

My body lotion isn’t working as well as it normally does. Why?
Karen, NSW

Hi Karen, this can often be related to changes in weather. Habitually we may need to adjust our beauty routines with the changes in seasons. For instance, a light lotion might work well in autumn (fall) or spring, but you may find that it just doesn’t cut it come summer and winter.

Frequently in extreme temperatures we need to up our routine to include thicker, more moisturising products to protect our skin from the cold, heat and drying conditions of the weather and air-conditioning.

Try a body butter over a lotion for a while and see if the thicker butter works better to protect and nourish your skin.

I have seen so many products lately talking about how they are so natural. Is it better?
Clarice, NY USA

Hi Clarice, this is a hard question to answer as many times it comes down to personal preference. Yes, it probably is better to choose more natural ingredients, but some have been tried and tested over many years to prove their safety and efficacy.

You will find the consistency of many natural products to be a little different to others due to them not being chemically laden to keep them at a perfect colour & consistency. This isn’t a bad thing though. Shizen’s Salve is very similar to a famous cult cream in a white tube that has been around for 70+ years; the difference is that Shizen Salve is petroleum free & all natural. You might need to push the contents of the tube around a bit in cooler weather to get it moving, but it does not affect the way the product literally melts into your skin & disappears. It’s a small price to pay if you are looking for a natural alternative.

My suggestion is to not discount natural products when you are searching for new brands to try. You may be pleasantly surprised!
